Two hands in chains

The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is held on December 2 each year to focus attention on modern forms of slavery, such as child labour, the trafficking of people for cheap labour, sexual exploitation, forced marriage and forced recruitement of children for use in armed conflcit.

The date marks the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others (resolution 317(IV) of 2 December 1949).

This day is not to be confused with The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition which is observed on August 23 each year, the day designated by UNESCO to remind people of the tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade.

The aim of the this day is to give people a chance to reflect on the historic causes of slavery and the consequences of the slave trade.

The date itself is significant. It relates to an uprising that occurred between August 22 to August 23, 1791 on the island of Saint Domingue (now known as Haiti). That uprising began events that helped in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

The abolition of slavery and the abolition of the trade in slaves has taken place in countries around the world over many years.

In the USA, in 1865, after a long civil war was fought over the issue, the Thirteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution abolished slavery.
