Columbus Day is a public holiday in the U.S. held annually on the second Monday of October to celebrate the arrival of Christopher Columbus' in the Americas on October 12, 1492. The day became a national holiday in 1937.

For many people Columbus Day is a way of honoring the achievements of Columbus and celebrating the Italian-American heritage of the U.S. The holiday also generates controversy because the arrival of Columbus led to European settlement in the Americas and the demise of the Native Americans and their culture through colonization and the spread of disease.

In many parts of the United States there are Columbus Day Parades, street fairs featuring Italian food and culture and colorful clothing.
