Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is observed in the United States on September 17, the day the nation's constitution was signed in 1787.

Newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst advocated a day to celebrate US Citizenship in 1939. Congress created "I Am an American Day" in 1940 and in 1952 President Harry Truman signed into law "Citizenship Day" to replace "I Am an American Day. In 1956 the President proclaimed the week beginning September 17 and ending September 29 of each year as "Constitution Week". In December 2004 a federal law was enacted designating September 17 as "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day".

On this day the citizens of the United States reflect on liberty and the responsibilities of citizenship. The United States president issues a proclamation each year for government buildings to display the country's flag and ceremonies and events are held in schools, churches and other places.
