Human Rights Day is held to bring the attention of the peoples of the world to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human Rights Day is held on December 10 and was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as Human Rights Day in 1950.

Events held during the day include political conferences and cultural events and exhibitions. Many events held are organized to educate and inform people, especially young people, about basic human rights and the importance of these rights. There is a different theme for the day each year.

Protests are also held to bring attention to the parts of the world where Human Rights are not recognized or respected. Since 1990 the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded on December 10 to mark Human Rights Day.
