Illinois state flag

Illinois is located in the Midwestern part of the United States, and is the most populous state in the area. The state animal, tree and flower of Illinois are White-tailed Deer, Live Oak and Violet. The state is also known by other names such as the Land of Lincoln and the Prairie State.

It was in 1673 that explorers from France canoed down the Mississippi River. With the Treaty of Paris in 1763 and the end of the French and Indian Wars, Illinois was ceded by France to Great Britain. Two of the first permanent settlements in the area were Cahokia and Kaskaskia. Illinois became the 21st state in the US on December 3, 1818. Springfield is the capital of the state, but Chicago has a larger population and is the third-largest city in the US.

Illinois is also the state where the country’s 40th president, Ronald Reagan was born; and the Dairy Queen franchise was first opened in the town of Joliet here, way back in 1940.
