Indiana is a state in the Midwest region of the US that has universities in seven different cities. The state capital is Indianapolis, the metropolitan area of which is also the largest in the state. Indianans live by the state motto of being “The Crossroads of America”. The name Indiana means “Land of the Indians”. Native Americans lived in Indiana for thousands of years.

The European history of the state can be traced back to 1679, when Robert Cavelier happened upon this area en route to the Pacific Ocean. He was soon followed by fur traders from France.

Also known as the Hoosier State, basketball plays an important part in the heritage and history of Indiana. The state officially entered the Union on December 11, 1816 when it became the 19th state of the U.S. The state has 3 national parks along with 24 state parks and 17 historic sites.
