Iowa state flag

Which state has a motto of “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain”? It is none other than the Hawkeye State, otherwise known as Iowa.

American Indians arrived in the state over 13,000 years ago. The European history of the state began in 1673, when French explorers visited the area. The Iowa area was claimed for France and remained a French Territory until 1763. Iowa was included in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 to become under US control and officially entered statehood on December 28, 1846.

The capital and largest city of the Hawkeye State is Des Moines. Some of the most popular landmarks in the state include Iowa State University in Ames, the Missouri River and Sioux City where the Twin Bings cherry candies are churned out.

The name Iowa came from an Indian word which means “This is the Place” or “The Beautiful Land”. The state tree is the oak, the state flower is the wild prairie rose and the state bird is the Eastern Goldfinch.
