Jackie Robinson, born on January 31, 1919, was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era.

When the Brooklyn Dodgers started Jackie Robinson at first base on April 15, 1947, it ended racial segregation in the Major leagues. Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated on April 15 each year to commemorate the event.

Over his amazing 10 year baseball career Jackie Robinson won Rookie of the Year, was an All-Star for 6 consecutive seasons, won the Most valuable Player Award and played in six World Series.

The MLB retired his uniform number 42 in 1997. He was the first pro athlete to receive that honor.
