The capital of Louisiana is Baton Rouge, while the largest city is New Orleans. The history of Louisiana can be traced back to 1682, when Sieur de la Salle claimed all the land at the mouth of the Mississippi River and purchased it for Louis XIV of France. After it was ceded to Spain, Louisiana reached official statehood on April 30, 1812.
