Michigan state flag

Commonly known as the Wolverine State or the Great Lakes State, Michigan is located in the Great lakes region of the Midwest of the United States. Named after Lake Michigan the word Michigan is the French adoption of the Ojibwa word ‘mishigami’ meaning ‘large lake’.

Michigan is the only state to consist of two Peninsulas; the Upper and Lower. Michigan was first occupied by various Native American tribes and the first permanent European settlement was founded in 1668 by a French missionary, Jacques Marquette.

The capital of Michigan is Lansing, even though a lot of people believe it is Detroit. In fact, Detroit is the largest city within the State.

The Upper Peninsula isn't densely populated, yet it plays an important role as a very popular tourist destination and a center for natural resources, which are found here in abundance. The Lower Peninsula is populated with manufacturing and high tech industries.
