National Bird Day is celebrated each year on January 5. This day was chosen because it is the end of the Christmas Bird Count in the USA, which runs from December 14 to January 5. During the Bird Count the country is focused on native birds. At the end of that three weeks National Bird Day begins the focus on captive birds that are native to other countries.

The aim of National Bird day is to raise awareness of the needs of birds and improving the welfare of birds kept in captivity. Activities that take place during Bird Day range from bird watching, studying birds, educating bird owners to bird adoption.

With nearly 12 percent of the world's almost 10,000 bird species in danger of extinction it is important to protect them. The plight of birds acts as a barometer to the health of our global environment.
