National Freedom Day is an observance that takes place on February 1st each year to honor the signing of a joint resolution of the House and the Senate that later became the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

This amendment outlawed slavery.

Major Richard Wright Sr., a former slave and community leader in Philadelphia founded the National Freedom Day Association. It's aim was to organize a national holiday to commemorate Lincoln's signing of the Amendment on February 1, 1865 and to call attention to the ongoing struggles of African Americans.
