Located in the Southwestern regions of the United States, New Mexico is ranked 5th in total area and 36th in population of the US states.

The capital of New Mexico is Santa Fe, while Albuquerque is the largest city in the region.

The state was inhabited by indigenous peoples for a very long time before European exploration. It has the second highest percentage of Native Americans after Alaska. New Mexico also ranks 1st for having the highest percentage of Hispanic ancestory.

New Mexico is often confused for taking its name from the nation of Mexico. However, the name New Mexico was first coined back in 1563, while the nation of Mexico wasn't known by this name until 1821.

There are a number of mountainous regions within New Mexico, and the climate of the area also ranges from semi-arid to arid throughout the year. It is also a wildlife hub and contains extensive habitat for a number of plants and animals.
