Waitangi Day is a national public holiday in New Zealand each year on February 6 to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.

The treaty was signed by representatives of the British Crown and Maori chiefs at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands.

The treaty made New Zealand part of the British Empire. It also guaranteed Maori rights to their land and the rights of British subjects. On Waitangi Day there are many speeches and Maori cultural performances
